What is Chautauqua?
Chautauqua was a popular association and amusement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The heart and soul of Chautauqua was the talent, the lectures, the entertainers, and the teachers who provided the culture and entertainment. Chautauquas in the rural areas, gathered and the largest audiences and made the greatest impact on the communities. New Salem continues that Chautauqua tradition by offering a series of plays, concerts and lectures during the off-season. All shows are held in the 250 seat indoor theater. Cost and times varies from show to show. Interested parties should contact the visitor's center to make reservations.
